Choking Safety Poster
Graphic Designer
This capstone project tasked us with redesigning restaurant choking safety posters to address a real-world issue: almost no one looks at them. I noticed the life-saving positions resembled wrestling holds, so I reframed each rescue step as a wrestling move and paired it with culturally inspired characters tied to different cuisines (Japanese, Mexican, Greek) to make the message feel familiar, memorable, and hard to ignore. The project was later featured by Bloomberg News in a story about modernizing choking safety posters. I am happy to share the article with you, which can be found here: http://bloom.bg/2jkgmmA or download the article here.
After the Bloomberg feature, restaurants began reaching out to purchase the posters for real-world use. To ensure the instructions were accurate and compliant, I partnered with a New York State health department contact to validate the content and confirm the steps were correct and life-saving. The result was a student project that turned into an ongoing, real-world product, with restaurants still requesting prints to help staff and guests spot critical choking guidance quickly.
